To solve the problems based on alphabets quickly :

(i)Remember the position of each letter in the above series.

For example, the positions of E and S in the above series are 5th and 19th .

(ii) Remember the position of each letter when the above series is written in the reverse order.

For example, the positions of X and D would be 3rd and 23rd respectively when the series is written in the reverse order.

If the letters of the above alphabets are arranged in a reverse order, which will be the fourteenth letter to the left of the third letter from the right ?

Solution :

After reversing the above series, the third letter from right would obviously be ‘C’. Now the fourteenth letter to the left of C would be ( 3 + 14 = 17 ) 17th letter from Right in the series which is ‘Q’. So the Answer is ‘Q’.

NOTE :  Some students, while solving such problems, write in whole series in reverse order and then solve the problem. It really is very time consuming and one must avoid doing it.

It can be seen that when the series is written in reverse order every letter retains its position in the series when counted from the opposite side. For example, in the above series, the position of ‘F’ from left side is 6th and also when the series written in reverse order the position of ‘F’ will remain 6th when counted from the Right side.

So, to solve the above problem quickly, find out, without reversing the series, the third letter from the left (instead of finding the third letter from the right in the series written in reverse order). It is ‘C’.

Now, find out the fourteenth letter to the right (and not left) of ‘C’. It will be ( 3 + 14 = 17 ) 17th letter in the series which is ‘Q’. So the answer is ‘Q’.

(Q.2)      Which letter in the above alphabet series ( given in example I ) is the 8th letter to the right of the letter which is 12th from the left?

Solution : The 12th letter from the left is L and the 8th letter to the right of it would be ( 12 + 8 = 20 ) 20th letter in the series which is ‘T’.

Answer : T

(Q.3)      If the above alphabet is written in the reverse order, which will be the 8th letter to the right of  the tenth letter from the left ?

Solution : The tenth letter from Right is ‘Q’ ( when the above alphabet is written in reverse order, ‘Q’ will be the tenth letter in the series when counted from left ). Now, find out the 8th letter to the left (and not Right of ‘Q’). It is ( 10 + 8 = 18 ) 18th letter in the series when counted from right.

 Answer : I

(Q.4)      If the above alphabet is written in the reverse order which will be the letter to the immediate left of ‘M’ ?

Solution : Without reversing the series, the letter to the immediate Right of ‘M’ would be the same as the letter to the immediate left of ‘M’ after writing the series in reverse order.  So, find out the letter to the immediate right of ‘M’ (without reversing the series). It is ‘N’.

(Q.5)      Arrange the following alphabet in reverse order. Then take away each alternate letter starting from the second from the left hand side which letter will be the third to the right of the eight letter from the left .

Solution : First cut-off each alternate letter starting from the second from the Right (and not left) without writing the series in reverse order. Now, it is clear that the third letter to the left of the eight letter from Right is ‘F’.

(Q.6)      If the above alphabet (given in examples) is written in reverse order, which will be the 4th letter to the left of the 7th from the Right ?

Solution : The 7th letter from Left (without writing the series in reverse order) is ‘G’. Now, the 4th letter to the Right (and not left) of ‘G’ is ‘K’.

Examples

(Q.1)      If the first four letters of the word ANTHRODOMORA HISM ’  are written in the reverse order followed by the next four written in reverse order followed by the next four written in the reverse order and so on, which letter is the 12th in the written order ?

Solution : ANTH  RODO  MORA  HISM

First divide the word in the groups of four letters by underlining them, starting from the left.

Now, it is clear that the answer is ‘M’.

NOTE : For solving this kind of questions, one should not write the groups of letters in the reverse order. It is needless and time consuming.

(Q.2)      If the first and the sixth letters in the word ‘ PRINCIPLES were interchanged, also the second and the seventh letters, the third and the eight and so on, which letter would be the seventh letter counting from your right ?

Solution : P R I N C I P L E S

First connect the respective letters, which are to be interchanged, with the help of arrows. Then, it becomes clear that the position of ‘N’, which is 7th letter from Right, is to be interchanged  by ‘E’.

(Q.3)      If in the word ‘ ORGANISATION ’ the first letter becomes third and third becomes first, second letter becomes fourth and fourth letter becomes second and so on, which will be the 8th letter ?

‘A’ is the 8th letter. Now, we have to see which letter is to be interchanged with ‘A’. Therefore, by connecting the respective letters, which are to be interchanged, with the help of arrow, it becomes clear that ‘I’ becomes 8th letter .

(Q.4)     If the first three letters of the word ‘ UNIVERSAL ’ are written in reverse order followed by the next three written in the reverse order and so on, which letter is the 7th in the written order ?

(Q.5)     If the first and the third letter in the word ‘ CONGREGATION ’ were interchanged, also the second and the fourth letter, the fifth and the seventh letter and so on, which letter would be the 8th counting from your left ?

Examples

(Q.1)      Two letters in the word ‘ DREAM ’ have as many letters between them in the word as in the alphabet. Write the one of the two which appears earlier in the alphabet.

Solution : The first letter goes two steps back in the successive groups. The second letter goes one step forward in odd number terms and one step backward in even number terms. The third letter goes two steps forward in each group.

Solution : The first letters of the successive groups are K, M, O, Q . Clearly, the first  

letter of the next group will be S .

Similarly, the second letters of the successive groups are U, O, I, E. Clearly, the second letter of the next group would be the fourth letter to the left of ‘E’ in the alphabet. It is ‘A’. The third letters are Z, X, V, T. Clearly, the third letter of the next group in the above series would be ‘R’.

(Q.5)      Mehrunisa is the 11th from the either end of the row of girls, how many girls are there in that row ?

Solution :            10 + 1 + 10    =    21

(Q.6)      In a row of children, Kamal is sixth from the left and Appu is fourth from the right . When Kamal  and Appu exchange positions,  Appu  becomes seventeenth from the right. Which will be Kamal’s position from the left ?

(Q.1)      In a certain code PRAMOD is written as SODJRA. How is KESHAV written in the code ?

Solution :  The first, third and fifth letters in the word ‘ PRAMOD ’ are moved three steps forward while second, fourth and sixth letters are moved three steps, backward to code it as ‘ SODJRA ’ . Similarly, ‘ KESHAV ’ is written as ‘ NBVEDS ’.

(Q.2) In a certain code MONKEY is written as XDJMNL . How would TIGER be written in that code ?

Solution :  All the letters in the word ‘ MONKEY ’ are first written in a reverse order and then each letter is moved one step backward to code it was ‘ XDJMNL ’.

Similarly, ‘ TIGER ’ is coded as ‘ QDFHS ’.

(Q.3)      In a certain Code, PROSE is written PPOQE. How would LIGHT be written in that code ?

Solution : The second and fourth letters of the word ‘ PROSE ’ are moved two steps backward to code it as ‘ PPOQE ’. Similarly, ‘ LIGHT ’ is coded as ‘ LGGFT ’.

(Q.4)      In a certain code RATIONAL is written as RTANIOLA. How would TRIOLA is coded TRIBAL be written in that code ?

(Q.5)      In a certain code FORGET is written  as  DPPHCU. How would DOCTOR be written in that code ?

Solution :  In the word ‘ FORGET ’ its 1st, 3rd and 5th letters are moved two steps backward and the 2nd, 4th and 6th letters are moved one step forward, to code it as ‘ DPPHCU ’. Similarly, ‘ DOCTOR ’ is coded as ‘ BPAUMS ’.

(Q.6)      In a certain code SCRIPT is written as TCQIQT. How is DIGEST written in that code ?

Solution :            SCRIPT  TCQIQT

Solution :  ‘ KCOLC ’ is written in reverse order. So ‘ STEPS ’ will be written ‘ SPETS ’.

(Q.8)      In a certain Code, the word SERPENT is written as TNEPRES. How will word PLAGUE be written in that code ?

Solution :   ‘ TNEPRES ’  is written in reverse order. So ‘ PLAGUE ’ will be written as ‘ EUGALP ’.
